Windows VPN Connection Setting Instructions

Windows 2000 users only!

Windows 2000 requires a Registry edit to enable L2TP/IPSec to interoperate with Purdue's VPN servers. This is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 310109. You can set the appropriate Registry settings by clicking here. After you download the file, unzip the .reg file and double-click it to merge the entries into your Registry.

After adding these entries to your Registry, you must reboot your Windows 2000 system for the change to take effect. Then continue with the instructions below.

Connecting to Purdue AirLink

What is Purdue AirLink?

Purdue AirLink is the wireless network connection that is available to all members of the Purdue community. You can connect to Purdue AirLink with a wireless-ready laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA). Windows users are encouraged to use the Windows Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to connect to Purdue AirLink.

Why should I use the Windows VPN Connection?

The Windows VPN Connection is the secondary method for connecting to Purdue AirLink. Because the Windows VPN connection is built into Windows, you are not required to install any additional software to connect to Purdue AirLink.

How to setup the Purdue AirLink

  1. Right click on My Network Places and select Properties.
  2. Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties.

  3. Click the Add button to create a new wireless network profile in the Wireless Connection properties window.

  4. Type "PAL" in the box labeled SSID and select Disabled for the Data Encryption.
  5. Click OK twice.
  6. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  7. Select Network and Internet Connections, and then select Network Connections.
  8. Select Create a new connection from the left-side menu. When the New Connection Wizard is launched, click Next.
  9. Select Connect to the network at my workplace, and then click Next.

  10. Select Virtual Private Network Connection, and then click Next.
  11. Enter a descriptive name in the Company Name textbox, and then click Next.
  12. Select Do not dial the initial connection if the Public Network window appears, and then click Next.
  13. Type vpn.purdue.edu for the hostname or IP address text box, and then click Next.
  14. Select My Use Only, and then click Next.
  15. Select Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop only if you wish to have a shortcut to the connection on your desktop, then click Finish.
  16. Click the Properties button when the Connect PAL window appears.
     

     
  17. Click the Networking tab.
  18. Select L2PT IPSec VPN from the Type of VPN drop-down box, and then click OK.

  19. Click on the Security tab.

  20. Select Typical (recommended settings), and then select Require secured password from the Validate my identity as follows: drop-down box.
  21. Select Require data encryption (disconnect if none), and then click the IPSec Settings... button.

  23. Select Use pre-shared key for authentication.
  24. Type PurdueVPN as the authentication key (this is case sensitive, so type it exactly as shown), and then click OK.

After you have completed creating your PAL connection using the New Connection Wizard, you can activate it at any time by doing the following:

  1. Click on the connection icon located on your desktop.

    If there is not an icon on your desktop for the VPN connection, click Start Menu , select Control Panel and then double click on Network Connections.
     

  2. Enter your Purdue Career Account username and password. Leave the Save this user name and password for the following users: box unchecked to prevent someone using your computer from having access to your account.
  3. Click the Connect button.
