MacOS VPN
How do I set up my machine at home running Mac OS X to do this?
To do this for Mac OS 10.2 or greater:
The most reliable VPN connection can be established by using the Cisco VPN client for Mac OS X.
- Download the appropriate Cisco VPN client installer for your version of MacOS to your desktop by double clicking on one of the following files:
MacOS 10.4.x (Intel/PPC): vpnclient-darwin-4.9.01.0030-universal-k9.dmg
MacOS 10.2-10.3.x: vpnclient-darwin-4.8.00.0490-GUI-k9.dmg
- Double click on the file you just downloaded which will mount a virtual drive called "CiscoVPNClient'
- Double click on the virtual drive which will open a folder containing "Cisco VPN Client.mpkg" and two other folders.
- Double click on "Cisco VPN Client.mpkg" and follow the installation instructions. Eject "CiscoVPNClient".
- Find "VPNClient.app" in your Applications folder and double click on it to start the VPN client.
- Click on connect; login using your career account login and password; then, minimize the VPN client until you are ready to disconnect and proceed to use your network connection as if you were on campus.
To do this for Mac OS 10.0 - 10.1:
Mac OS 10.x and above has built into the OS support for VPN via PPTP. Below is how to configure a connection.
- From the menu at the top select Go -> Applications.
- From the application pop-up window double click on the "Internet Connect" icon.
- From the menu at the top select File -> New VPN Connection Window.
- If you have not setup VPN before you may be prompted with the following window, "Your computer needs to be set up for VPN (PPTP) connections."
- Click on the continue button.
- For "Server address:" enter vpn.purdue.edu.
- For User name and Password provide your career account information.
- Click on Connect to begin your VPN connection.
