| Field Info: Email
The email field may be used to advertise your "preferred" email address or to create another valid "@purdue.edu" address for you.
You may use the email field to enter a "preferred" email address - simply list an existing email address. (Then someone viewing your directory entry will be able to locate a valid email address which they may use to send you mail.)
The email field will also be modified when you set the "service" field of your directory entry to one of the active settings ("forward" or "store"). When changing the "service" setting, you may select one of the default email settings displayed or type in another @purdue.edu address.
The list of "default" displayed settings (changes based on the "service" field's setting) may contain:
alias@purdue.edu (Based on alias)
qualified_name@purdue.edu (Based on qualified name)
forwarding_address@somewhere.com (Based on forwarding address)
If you elect to enter another @purdue.edu address, it will automatically become listed as your "preferred" email address. The "email" field can accommodate a longer "@purdue.edu" email address. (This field has a length restriction of 255 characters and may contain hyphens.)
For example, for Veronica Smyth's alias is "vsmyth" and her "service" field is set to "store". The alias "vsmyth" is no longer changeable by the user. By using the email field, Veronica could create another @purdue.edu address. If she were to place the following into her email field:
vjsmyth@purdue.edu
She would create a new email address for herself. All of the following email addresses would work:
vsmyth@purdue.edu (Based on alias)
veronica.j.smyth.0@purdue.edu (Based on qualified name)
vjsmyth@purdue.edu (Based on email field)
If you set your service entry to "reject", the email field will be cleared. (While the service is "reject" the email field can not be set to an @purdue.edu address. However, you may use the email field to advertise a non-purdue.edu email address.)
If you set your service entry to "forward", the email field will initially contain the address to which you are forwarding mail.
If you set your service entry to "store", the email field will initially be set to "alias@purdue.edu".
