Field Info: Service

The "service" field in your directory entry is used to tell Mailhub what to do with mail received for your @purdue.edu address.

Mailhub is responsible for handling mail sent to your @purdue.edu mail address. The "service" field in your directory entry is used to tell Mailhub what to do with mail that is received for your @purdue.edu address.

The default "service" field for new directory entries is "reject". Mail received for an @purdue.edu address where the "service" field is set to "reject" will be returned to the sender as undeliverable. (The @purdue.edu mail address has not been activated.)

By selecting one of the active Mailhub service settings (forward or store), mail sent to your @purdue.edu will be delivered by Mailhub.

  • If the "service" field is set to "forward xxxx@other_mail.acct", Mailhub will redirect mail received for the @purdue.edu address to the email account specified.

This setting is useful if you wish to redirect mail received for your @purdue.edu address to an existing email account, such as: AOL, hotmail, @insightbb.com, @verizon.net, or Purdue departmental account. The @purdue.edu mail will simply be sent on to the email account specified for you to read there.

  • If the "service" field is set to "store", a Mailhub account will be created automatically, usually within 60 seconds. Once completed, mail sent to your @purdue.edu address will be stored on a Mailhub machine.
By setting the "service" field in your directory entry to an active selection, an individual searching for you in the Purdue Electronic Directory Lookup will find an email address.

Additional information on the standard options for the "service" field can be found below:

reject Mail sent to your @purdue.edu address will be bounced (returned to the sender).
