I received a virus in an e-mail sent to my @purdue.edu address. Why?

There a couple of reasons as to why this can happen:

  • Check to make sure the e-mail message was really sent to your @purdue.edu e-mail address. The full headers will document what mail servers actually processed the mail message.  The message may not have been processed by 'smtp.purdue.edu' and its virus scanning. 
  • Viruses can only be identified if they are "known" by the anti-virus software. New or extremely rare viruses may not be recognized by the anti-virus software.
