General E-mail Client Configuration Settings (For Advanced Users)

Incoming Mail Server:  your_alias.mail.purdue.edu

Veronica Smyth, with an alias of vsmyth, would configure her mail client to use an incoming mail server of vsmyth.mail.purdue.edu.

The Mailhub supports both IMAP (port 143) and POP3 (port 110) for mail retrieval. Encryption is required on the standard ports using the STARTTLS mechanism, or on the SSL ports of IMAP (993) and POP3 (995).

Outgoing Mail Server:  smtp.purdue.edu, port 587
The Mailhub requires the use of SMTP authentication on port 587 when sending e-mail, and requires encryption via the STARTTLS mechanism.

Alternately, the use of SMTP authentication on port 465 is supported using SSL encryption.  This can be useful if you have an e-mail client which does not support sending on port 587.

Port 25 can be used, but it does not support SMTP authentication, which makes its use appropriate only for machines connected to the Purdue network. Use of SMTP authentication is recommended since it will always work, even if the computer is moved to a different (off-campus) Internet connection.
