Why do some attachments show up as "winmail.dat"?

This is a known issue with the Microsoft Outlook e-mail client.  You can find more information about this issue on the following Microsoft web page:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;278061

Essentially, the problem is:

  1. Person sending the message uses Outlook and has it configured with "Rick-Text Format" (RTF) turned on (either globally in the client or by a setting in each address book entry).
  2. If the recipient's e-mail client doesn't know about the format (i.e. it is not Outlook), then the recipient sees the attachment, "Winmail.dat".

In order to solve this problem, the sender must turn off "Rich-Text Format" (RTF) and select "Plain Text" formatting.  The Microsoft URL provided above gives exact directions on how to do this.
