With your Purdue e-mail stored on the Mailhub, you can configure an e-mail client to securely access your e-mail from anywhere in the world. The Purdue Mailhub system supports the IMAP and POP protocols for retrieving e-mail, SMTP authentication for sending, and security via SSL/TLS encryption.
Know your Mailhub alias and password. These are needed to set up your @purdue.edu e-mail preferences, configure your e-mail client, and access your e-mail. (This alias and password are the same ones used when logging in via the Purdue Web e-mail client.) If you do not know your alias or password, follow the link below. After entering your legal name at the bottom of the page, your alias will be displayed along with instructions on how to obtain your password.
Make sure the service field in your personal directory entry is set to store. All of the e-mail client instructions provided here assume your e-mail is stored on the Mailhub.
The Purdue Mailhub system offers a pre-configured web-based e-mail client which you may use immediately after completing only steps 1 and 2.
This has the advantage of an extremely easy setup, but is often suited to lighter e-mail loads or small numbers of MIME attachments. Try it out, and if it does not suit your needs, you can come back to learn how to configure other e-mail clients.
Even for those people that use a full-fledged e-e-mail client, logging into Purdue Web Mail can be very handy when traveling or while sitting at an unfamiliar computer.
These instructions will guide you in configuring some popular e-mail clients for secure mail retrieval via the IMAP protocol, and secure SMTP authentication when sending.
The IMAP protocol is much more powerful and flexible than the older POP protocol. IMAP allows you to access the same mail folders from different computers and different e-mail clients, and is the best option for most people. Using IMAP also allows you to use Purdue Web Mail interchangeably with a full-featured e-mail client.
