Password Selection

Strong password guidelines can be found on the Secure Computing Best Practices site.

Your password can be any 7-8 characters of your choice. Avoid month names because they are restricted. Choose something that is easy to remember but difficult to guess (not your spouse or children’s names, your address, or your phone number). Your password is the last line of defense against intrusion, so choose it wisely. Your new password must follow these rules:

It must be completely different from the previous three passwords that you’ve used.

  • It must have seven or eight characters only.
  • It must include at least one numeric character.
  • It must not consist of your name.
  • It must not begin with any of the following:
    • APPL, APR, AUG, ASDF, BASIC, CADAM, DEC, DEMO, FEB, FOCUS, GAME, IBM, JAN, JUL, JUN, LOG, MAR, MAY, NET, NEW, NOV, OCT, PASS, ROS, SEP, SIGN, SYS, TEST, TSO, VALID, VTAM, XXX or 1234
