Instructions For Using FTP With The Mainframe

Host Explorer FTP is the standard secure FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client in Purdue's Administrative Computing area. Other FTP clients function similarly but may not be secure.

If you are unaware of any of the information necessary to complete your connection, please contact your department's Security Coordinator for more information.

If you have already used the FTP utility to transfer a file, view information about Importing a Downloaded File into Excel ; otherwise proceed with the list of instructions that follow about Using Host Explorer FTP

The following is a list of information that is needed prior to connecting to the mainframe:

    • The host name (Ex. Mainframe ac.adpc.purdue.edu)
    • Your ACID or login and password
    • Access rights to FTP to the Mainframe
    • The specific Remote Directory Name to connect with. The mainframe cannot be browsed using the FTP utility

HostExplorer 2006 11.0 Secure FTP Setup Instructions

Please Note the Follwoing

  • These instructions assume you will be performing the install on a Windows XP workstation
  • Hummingbird HostExplorer 11.0 and the Hummingbird Connectivity Secure Shell add-on is installed on the workstation
  1. Double-click the Hummingbird Neighborhood icon on the desktop



  2. Double-click on ‘New FTP Profile’.



  3. The ‘FTP Site Properties’ dialog box will appear. Enter the following parameters to setup secure FTP-TLS connections to the mainframe.
    • Host Address: ac.adpc.purdue.edu
    • User Name:
    • Initial Directory:
    • Check ‘Root To This Directory’
    • Select ‘SSL/TLS Explicit’ from the Security drop-down box.
    • Set TCP/IP Port to 621.



  4. Click the ‘Configure…’ button to set Security properties. For proper data protection, the following settings should be used.
    • Select ‘TLS Version 1’ or ‘Version 3’ from the SSL/TLS Version drop-down box.
    • Select ‘Connect (ignore errors’ or ‘Prompt for acceptance’ from the Certificate Verification Errors drop-down box. The latter setting will notify users of possible certificate errors and prompt them whether to continue on connect.
    • Check the ‘Encrypt Data Channel’ box.



  5. Click OK. This will return you to the FTP Site Properties General tab.

  6. Click the ‘Advanced’ tab.

  7. Make sure that the 'Passive Mode' check box is selected. Click the check box until it is checked and not grayed out.



  8. On the same tab, uncheck ‘Auto-Detect Server Type’ and select ‘MVS’ from the ‘Type of FTP Server:’ drop-down box.



  9. Click OK to save the FTP Profile.

  10. The ‘Save FTP Profile’ dialog will appear and prompt you for a profile name. This is the name that will be displayed in the Hummingbird Neighborhood menu. Choose an appropriate name and click ‘Save’.



  11. The Hummingbird Neighborhood should now have a new icon showing the FTP Profile with the name given in the previous step.



  12. To connect using the new profile, double click on the new FTP Profile icon in the Hummingbird neighborhood (shown above). You will be prompted for your password.



  13. Type in your password and click OK to continue. After a few moments, if the connection succeeds you will see a new Explorer window similar to the following.



You are ready to use secure file transfers to the mainframe using the new FTP-TLS profile you have created.
