Standard Conversion
Using universal videocassette recorders, DISS can transfer videotapes produced in foreign countries to the United States standard format, making most foreign-produced video programs available for campus classroom or research work. The universal recorders can translate between the three major broadcasting systems: PAL (predominant in Western European and Asian countries); SECAM (used in the former Soviet Union, most of Eastern Europe, France, and the Middle East); and NTSC (the U.S. standard; also predominant in Canada, Japan, Central America, and parts of South America). BNS can also translate United States videocassettes to PAL and SECAM for presentation at conferences in foreign countries.
