Getting started with your new HP tablet or notebook

To complete the setup process for your new HP notebook or tablet, you must know your Purdue Career Account login id and password, before proceeding with these steps.

If you encounter problems at any time during this set-up process, contact the ITaP Customer Service Center by calling 4-4000, e-mailing itap@purdue.edu, or stopping by STEW G65.
  1. Connect to Purdue's wireless computer network, Purdue Air Link (PAL 2.0)
  2. There is an icon on the desktop called "Purdue Airlink Setup". Before you click on this icon to run this script, you must:
    • Turn on wireless. The blue wireless light on the computer should be on.
    • Be on the Purdue West Lafayette campus within wireless range. For a list of academic buildings with complete coverage, see: Purdue Air Link Buildings.
    • Know your Purdue career account login id and password.

    Instructions:

    a. Click on the shortcut named "Purdue Airlink Setup Shortcut"
    b. Select PAL 2.0 (Preferred)
    c. Wait until the message window displays saying "Install Completed"
    d. Click on the Wireless Connection balloon to enter your credentials (Purdue career account and login id). Leave the "Login domain" field blank.

If successful, you will see another balloon that says "Wireless Network Connection is now connected. Connected to: PAL 2.0".

You must complete this step before proceeding with Step 2 and Step 3.

  3. Set up your @purdue.edu e-mail in Microsoft Outlook
  4. There is an icon on the desktop called "Setting up Outlook 2003 with the Purdue Mailhub". Before you click on this icon to run this script, you must:
    • Know your Purdue career account login id and password
    • Be set to "Store" in Purdue's electronic directory.
    • Most students are set to "store" their e-mail on the Purdue Mailhub during Day On Campus. If you forwarded your e-mail to another server, this set-up script will not work. To make sure the service field in your personal directory entry is set to store, or to edit your directory information, go to: Mailhub Client Setup before proceeding with this step.

  5. Download Antivirus & Security Software
  6. The SecurePurdue website offers McAfee VirusScan freely to all Purdue students, faculty and staff. Before you install any antivirus software package, make sure you check to see what is already available on your laptop.

Early shipments of HP notebooks and tablets came with Norton Antivirus already installed. If you install more than one virus scanner on your computer, you may have problems with the computer slowing down or locking up. Check to see what is already installed. Use Add/Remove programs in the Windows Control Panel to remove any existing virus scanning software before you install your preferred virus scanning software.

The SecurePurdue website also recommends Best Practices to protect your laptop and data, software updates, information about firewalls, spam and spyware. Once you have established your wireless connection, visit this website for security downloads and recommendations.
