JAWS

These are a few easy steps for starting JAWS:

Login Procedure

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del .
  2. Type in your login.
  3. Press the Tab key.
  4. Type in your password.
  5. Press the Enter key.

Starting JAWS

  1. Wait until the computer chimes.
  2. Press the Windows key.
  3. Type JAWS into the search box of the Start menu. The cursor is in the search box by default.
  4. Press Enter

Frequently Asked Keyboard Commands for JAWS

These keyboard commands are not obvious in the standard JAWS help which can be located by pressing INSERT + H or for application specific help INSERT + F1 + F1 .

Microsoft Word Keyboard Commands

Microsoft Word Keyboard Commands
Description Key Sequence
Read to End of Current Document
This does not work in dialog boxes.

Toggle among keyboard echo options
Thes effects what audio response JAWS provides when the user is typing. The options are; None, Characters, Words, and Characters and Words.
INSERT + 2
Bring Up Form Element List Dialog Box Insert + F5
Bring up Headings List Dialog Box INSERT + F6
Bring up Links List Dialog Box INSERT + F7

Word documents can be navigated via their formatting and styles by using the Insert + Z key sequence to enter the Quick Keys mode. The following keys will allow navigation through the document. Holding down the Shift key while pressing the following keys will move backwards through the document. Quick Keys mode can be shut off by pressing Insert + Z again.

Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox

Internet Explorer and Firefox Keyboard Commands
Description Key Sequence
Refresh Screen INSERT + ESC
Skip header Information INSERT + ENTER
Bring up Frames List Dialob Box INSERT + F9
Right click on a Link
This will bring up a menu which will allow the user to interact with trhe link in several ways.
INSERT + - (on num pad) tne * (on num pad)

Heading Navigation Commands for Internet Explorer and Firefox
Description Key Sequence
Bring up Headings List Dialog Box INSERT + F6
Next Heading H (Shift + H will move to the Previous heading.)
Navigate by Heading Level
This works well if the page is coded to consistantly use headings. Heading 1 information is most general or important. Heading 2 information is more specidfic ore less important etc. Headings are between 1 and 6.
The numbers on the top row of the keyboard between 1 and 6.
