Macintosh Keyboard Utilities

The Macintosh has several keyboard utilities that can assist users who have difficulty with using the keyboard. These utilities include:

Sticky Keys

This feature enables a user to press one or more modifier keys such as CTRL, CMD, SHIFT, or the OPT key. The modifier keys remain on until a non-modifier key is pressed.

This feature can be turned on via the Universal Access item in the System Preferences area.

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Universal Access
  3. Select keyboard.
  4. Check the radio button next to On in the Sticky Keys area.

Slow Keys

This feature filters out brief or repeated keystrokes. The amount of filtering can be adjusted.

This feature can be turned on via Universal Access Center in the System Preferences panel.


  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Universal Access
  3. Select keyboard.
  4. Check the radio button next to On in the Slow Keys area.

Mouse Keys

This feature allows the user to use the NUM PAD on the keyboard to move the mouse pointer around the screen.

Mouse Keys can do the following mouse functions via keys on the NUM Pad.

Doulbe Right Click - then +

This feature can be turned on via Universal Access in the System Preferences.


  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
  2. Select Universal Access
  3. Select Mouse.
  4. Check the radio button next to On in the Mouse Keys area.
