Read and Write Gold Logo

Read and Write Gold

Read & Write Gold is a program to assist with reading and writing. Read & Write Gold will read highlighted text on the screen and is also compatible with Adobe Acrobat/Reader, Daisy, and Microsoft Word. Writing features include research, brainstorming and outlining, and proofreading tools. Other features include scanning, study skills, a translator, and a calculator.

Read and Write Gold Availibility

Read and Write Gold is availible in all ITaP PC(Windows) computer labs.

  1. Select the Start Menu.
  2. Type in "Read."
  3. Select Read and Write Gold from the results list.

Starting Read and Write Gold from Off-campus

  1. Connect to VPN https://webvpn.purdue.edu.
  2. Select Run from the Start Menu.
  3. Input \\newwinkey.itap.purdue.edu\readwritegold in the edit box.
  4. Launch read&write9.exe.

Spell Check

Phonetic Spell Checker- an advanced phonetic spell checker which analyzes and corrects students' spelling. Misspelled words are immediately identified and correct choices are displayed. Definitions for word choices can also be displayed and logs collect student data.

Word Prediction

Word Prediction- learns the writer's style and predicts the word currently being typed and the word that follows after Increases accuracy while reducing key strokes. Phonetic map available to help each user find the right word.

Dictionary

Talking Dictionary- an 180,000 word dictionary that speaks both the word and the definition.

Word Wizard

Word Wizard- helps to find words and information. For example, if the user searches using the phrase, 'parts of a car,' the Word Wizard will list words like 'throttle', 'tailpipep, and 'fender'.

Show Homophones

Shows all words that are homophones in the selected text.

Sounds Like (Homophones)

Homophone Checker- homophones are color coded and alternate choices are displayed- including definitions.

Hide Homophones

Hides all words that are homophones in the selected text.

Calculator

Talking Calculator- a simple or scientific talking calculator that provides an audit trail of calculated equations.

Rewind Speech

Rewind- moves to the previous word, sentence, or paragraph when using text to speech.

Play Speech

Text to Speech- reads text aloud, including websites and PDF files, with dual highlighting using natural sounding male and female voices. Boosts reading comprehension and allows writers to listen to their own written work.

Pause Speech

Pause- pauses the text to speech output. Click again to resume.

Forward Speech

Forward- moves to the next word, sentence, or paragraph when using text to speech.

Stop Speech

Stop- stops text to speech output.

Screenshot Reader

Screenshot Reader- users can select any part of the screen to be read aloud with highlighting, including any text embedded within an image or text that is contained within an inaccessible Flash application.

Speech Maker

Speech Maker- allows users to quickly and easily convert any text and convert it into a sound file, such as an MP3, using high-quality voices.

Daisy Reader

Daisy Reader- makes it possible for Daisy Version 3 to read aloud with high-quality speech integration.

Pronunciation Tutor

Pronunciation Tutor- breaks words up into syllables while displaying a moving mouth.

Scan

Scanning- creates read aloud versions from paper documents or digital images of documents. Users can even scan documents in through direct use of a digital camera.

Fact Finder

Fact Finder- students can retrieve online information in one step. Choose from over 20 different websites that include translation, dictionaries, and general information.

Fact Folder

Fact Folder- stores and categorizes retrieved information, both texts and images. The fact folder also automatically stores file sources and generates bibliographies.

Fact Mapper

Fact Mapper- allows users to graphically organize information, including images, on the screen.

Use the Translator

Translator- provides easy access to on-click translation of English words into Spanish. Works with any digital content, on-screen selections, accessible applications, website content, or digital textbooks.

Speech Input

Speech Input- allows the user to easily create documents by dictating into a microphone connected to the computer. A training program is included with the audible prompts to help the user with the set-up.

Screen Masking

Screen Masking- allows the user to 'mask' out areas of the screen and to change the Windows system background color. This enables the user to focus on a key area.

Extra Options

Extra Options- displays additional features that are not on the toolbar.

Launch PDF Aloud

Dynamically speech enables any accessible Adobe PDF file with dual highlighting support.

Change Toolbar

Text Help- displays alternate toolbars. Allows user to customize toolbar.

Help
Undock the Toolbar

Undocking the Toolbar- position the toolbar anywhere on the screen by dragging and dropping it. If the user docks the toolbar, it can also be undocked by clicking this button.

Study Skills Tools:

Study Skills Tools- facilitate active reading, writing, and learning. Students can highlight and extract text from any documents or website to create study guides, outlines, answer sheets, or to complete assignments

Highlight

Highlight- allows user to highlight text on the webpage or document. Options include highlighting in yellow, blue, green and pink.

Clear Highlights

Clear Highlight- clears the selected highlighted section.

Collect Highlights

Collect Highlights- allows user to display all highlighted section in a new MS Word document.

Summary

Summary Feature- users can select all or any portion of text in a document or on the screen and create a new Word document that contains the text collapsed into a summary.

Additional Help

By clicking the up-side-down triangle next to each feature more options are displayed. Most include an option to 'Watch a Video Tour' for the selected feature. This gives in depth information and a video demonstrating how to use the selected feature.
