WinBraille Basics

Launching WinBraille

  1. Select theStart Menu.
  2. Type winbraille into the search box.
  3. Press the enter key.

The WinBraille interface is similar to that of a word processor. Some of the features common to word processors, such as spell check, are not available in WinBraille, so it is best to edit a document before opening it in WinBraille.

Open a document

  • Select Open from the File menu.
    • Alt + F then O.
    • Ctrl + O.

    Open Dialog Box

  • The resulting dialog box is similar to most Windows dialog boxes. The only added feature is the ability to determine a Braille Profile.
  • The Braille profile determines how the final document is embossed. The profile includes margins and translation table for the document.

Creating a Braille Profile

The Braille profile controls how documents emboss. The margin settings are based on the 11" x 11.5" paper that is used with bhe Index Everest in the ATC. Other settings are the preference of the user. In the ATC the Braille profile can be defined by:

  1. Select the File menu.
  2. Select the Template Wizard....
  3. Select the Next button in the Template Wizard dialog box.
  4. Select Index Everest V2 int he Embosser Combo box.
  5. Select Next
  6. In the Select document paper size combo box, select 11 x 11.5in
  7. Orientation should be left at Portrait.
  8. Select Next
  9. The margins should be set as follows:
    Margin Setting
    Top 1 line
    Bottom 1 lines
    Inner 2 characters
    Outer 4 characters
  10. Select Next.
  11. Select the desired language for the Braille profile.
  12. Select Next.
  13. Set the Braille translation language and the Translation Properties.
  14. Select Next.
  15. Create a name for the template.
  16. Select Next.
  17. Select Finish.

The Braille profile is saved in the user's profile in the folder h:\pu.data\Application Data\Index Braille\winbraille\5.0\My Braille Templates. A user can have multiple profiles.

Translating a Document and Editing the Braille Transcription

Once the print document has been edited to the users satisfaction, select the Braille and select Translate or press CTRL + t . This will create the Braille translated document in a new document window.

  • The Braille will be displayed in ascii equivalent. For example; A will appear as ,a .
  • Visual users can view the text in a SimBraille font by selecting -Braille View from the View menu. In this font, raised dots will be displayed as large dots and non-raised dots, in the cell, will be displayed as small dots.
  • Inserted characters must be in ASCII equivalent Braille.
