Completion of Exchange migration brings new features, added space

ITaP has completed the migration of mailboxes to the new Exchange 2007 email environment.

“The migration went faster than expected, and I’ve heard several compliments about the new environment and the migration process,” said Ed Evans, ITaP’s director of software services.

Web users are reminded that the new URL for Outlook Web Access (OWA) is https://owa.purdue.edu.

Smartphone users are reminded to point their server configuration to owa.purdue.edu. Even if these users see intermittent connectivity, they will have to change settings if they haven’t already done so. (BlackBerrys on ITaP’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server will automatically pick up the new mailbox location.)

Smartphone configuration may be locally supported. Check with local IT departments to verify.

Mac users have reported improvement in Exchange 2007’s performance via two upgrade options. Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition (Entourage v13) is a free Microsoft upgrade to Entourage 2008. Also, Mac’s recently released Snow Leopard operating system (OS 10.6.1) offers native support for Exchange 2007. GoldAnswers — a Purdue-specific knowledge base — includes articles about configuring Entourage for ITaP Exchange services and configuring Entourage v13 to use Exchange 2007 mailboxes.

With the migration, each Exchange account now has a default storage-limit quota of 1 GB — up from the previous 500 MB. ITaP advises users to regularly archive and arrange old items, manage attachments and empty the Deleted Items folder as well as the Sent Items and Junk E-Mail folders. ITaP has posted a demonstration video of these tips, which will open in Windows Media Player.

When viewed in Internet Explorer, the new look and feel of OWA’s mailbox and calendar panes are closer to those seen in Outlook 2007. Thus, the web-access interface is more intuitively user-friendly.

Among the many useful new features is a change to the Out-of-Office Assistant, which sends automatic replies when a user is not in the office. Users can, in advance, set up time and date ranges to turn out-of-office replies on and off, as well as create different replies for on-campus and off-campus contacts.

Users requiring additional assistance with the Exchange 2007 environment are encouraged to: visit GoldAnswers and search “Exchange 2007”; or contact the Customer Service Center online, by phone at 49-44000 or email or in person from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in STEW G-65.
