Same Time & Different Place: Expanding the Traditional Classroom

The boundaries of the traditional classroom are shifting constantly due to new advancements in technology. Thanks to virtual meeting space it has become more common for students in different physical locations to meet at the same time for the same course. How will this affect the classroom in which you will teach in the years to come?

Orczyk (Associate Professor of Building Construction Management) have taken advantage of the Adobe Acrobat Connect (formerly Breeze) technology to bring students from around the country together in the same course. Not only do students meet at the same time in the same virtual room but they also break into smaller groups that meet in different virtual locations at the same time. Come and join us on Thursday, March 1 from 12:30-1:30 pm in STEW 214B to learn about some of the possibilities and challenges of the virtual classroom.

For Gabriela Weaver (Associate Professor of Chemistry) and Carlos Morales (Associate Professor of Computer Graphics Technology) however, video games present an opportunity to explore new frontiers in higher education. On Wednesday, April 11, 2007 from 1:00-2:00 pm in STEW 214B they will discuss their Chemistry Game, a video game designed to reinforce chemistry concepts.

Can today’s technology savvy students be connected to learning via the means of video games? Join us and find out for yourself what Gabriela and Carlos have to say in response to this question.

Wiki is such an approach. It gives students the opportunity and challenge to collectively shape the content of an online resource.
