ITaP’s
TLT Digital Content Development Grants
Proposal Submission Guidelines for 2008-2009
Purpose of the Program
The Teaching and Learning Technologies department of Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) is soliciting proposals from
Purdue faculty for the 2008-2009 grants. Originated in 1996, by the unit then named Multimedia Instructional Development
Center (MIDC), these faculty grants are designed to encourage the innovative use of instructional technology resources within
the University.
The goal of the program is to identify, select, and help implement projects that increase instructional effectiveness and
student success through the use of digital and online technology. The Teaching and Learning Technologies department seeks to
cultivate instructional excellence through experimentation with new ideas, teaching methods, and technologies. Projects should
be innovative and technologically sophisticated, with strong prospects for effective implementation and continued use.
Project proposals may address the strengths and limitations of applying technology in collaborative, interdisciplinary
environments. In general, projects should strive to enhance the quality of instruction at Purdue University.
Eligibility
All tenure-track and clinical faculty at the West Lafayette campus are eligible. At least one faculty member involved in the
project is required to schedule a consultation session with an IDC (Instructional Development Center) consultant in order for
the proposal to be eligible for review. Consultations can be scheduled until January 31, 2007 by calling 49-63257 or
e-mailing tlt-grants@purdue.edu. Proposals are to be submitted electronically.
Project Topics and Ideas
All proposals that involve the innovative use of technology to enhance teaching and learning will be considered for funding
through the 2008-2009 TLT Digital Content Development Grants. Specific project topics and ideas include, but are not limited
to, the following:
- Learning Object Development and multimedia authoring (e.g. Flash, Director, DVD authoring)
- Gaming, Simulation, and Immersive Environments
- Hybrid Learning
- Large Course or Large Impact Curriculum Redesign
- Database-driven web projects
- Innovative uses of technologies
Evaluation Process
All proposals submitted are required to meet the criteria outlined document titled
Appendix I - Application Checklist for 2008-2009. Applicants should go through the checklist to make
sure they comply with the criteria. Upon submission of the proposals, IDC (Instructional Development Center) consultants will
review the proposal and verify that it satisfies all the criteria. In case of a disagreement between your assessment and IDC’s
assessment of the checklist the lead faculty member for the project will be contacted by IDC staff immediately and will be
given an opportunity to make revisions to the proposal to ensure that it meets all the required criteria. TLT encourages
faculty to submit proposals as early as possible to ensure adequate time is left for any revisions. Proposals submitted by
the final deadline will be given two business days to resubmit their revised proposal showing proof that they meet the criteria
outlined in the checklist. If the lead faculty member fails to submit a revised proposal within two business days after they
receive notification from IDC, or if the revised proposal still does NOT meet the criteria outlined in the checklist the proposal
will be disqualified.
All applications meeting the checklist criteria for the 2008-2009 Digital Content Development grants will be evaluated by a
faculty committee along with representatives from the Center for Instructional Excellence and ITaP’s Teaching and Learning
Technologies department using the rubric outlined in the document titled
Appendix II - Proposal Evaluation Form.
Project Restrictions
- Maximum funding for TLT Digital Content Development Grants is limited to $15,000.00.
- Teaching and Learning Technologies will consider requests for repeat funding of an ongoing or previously-funded project
only when the proposal is accompanied by clear evidence of assessment and confirmation that additional support is
developmental, rather than sustaining.
- The TLT Digital Content Development Grant Program is funded through Academic General Funds (010). Please check with your
business office concerning allowable expenditures (for example, please do not include fringe benefits, indirect costs, or
graduate student tuition fees). In addition, general-purpose equipment (computer and otherwise) cannot be funded.
- Duplication of available University services will not be funded (examples: creation of student computer laboratories,
development of course management software, video production equipment, flatbed scanners, CD-ROM duplication equipment,
and so forth). Teaching and Learning Technologies and other centrally-funded units provide such equipment and services
to faculty. If necessary and applicable, a quote regarding the use of such services may be included in the budget.
- Activities funded by this program must be completed within twelve months, although the projects of which they may be a
part may run longer. Grant winners are expected to provide a midterm and final update of the status of their
project.
- Grant recipients are expected to present their projects during the 2009 or 2010 Teaching & Learning with
Technology (TLT) Conference organized by ITaP, and present or publish information related to their projects in other
appropriate academic forums. In order to ensure this, TLT will set aside $750.00 of the total money allocated to each
funded project. These funds will only be made available to grant winners upon their successful acceptance to a
professional conference, other than the TLT Conference, where they will be presenting the results of their project.
- Teaching and Learning technologies may also publish descriptions of grant-winning projects on its website to provide
samples for future applicants or demonstrate best practices.
Proposal Format and Deadlines
Proposals can be submitted through this website by using the link titled "Submit 2008 proposal." Before you submit your
proposal, please make sure you download a copy of
all the grant documents and complete the grant application.
Completed proposals are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, February 4, 2008. Grant winners will be announced at the
Teaching & Learning with Technology Conference
to be held on March 4-5, 2008. At this conference grant winners will get a chance to share ideas with colleagues and
fellow grant winners before they embark on their development activities. All grant winners are required to schedule a
follow-up consultation with an IDC consultant. During this consultation a more specific time table for the project's
completion will be discussed. Grant funds will only be released and transferred to faculty accounts upon completion of
this consultation and the signing of an agreement that specifies the details of the timeline and deliverables for the
project.
For additional information and questions about the application process, please contact the Instructional Development Center (IDC)
at 49-63257 or e-mail tlt-grants@purdue.edu.
