TLT Instructional Technology Grants
Proposal Submission Guidelines for 2010-2011

Purpose of the Program
The Instructional Development Center of the Teaching and Learning Technologies department of Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) is soliciting proposals from Purdue faculty for the 2010-2011 Instructional Technology Grants. Originated in 1996, by the unit then named Multimedia Instructional Development Center (MIDC), these faculty grants have been designed to encourage the innovative use of instructional technology resources within the University.

This year, the Instructional Development Center is still committed to cultivate the constant pursuit of innovative approaches utilizing teaching and learning technologies. The primary goal of this grant program is to support projects that investigate creative, innovative and technologically sophisticated uses of new digital technologies and have strong prospects for successful implementation, continued use, high impact instructional effectiveness and student success. For the 2010-2011 Grants selection, we expect to fund multiple projects up to a maximum of $120,000. The program is seeking to fund two types of project proposals:

Emerging Technology High Impact Award
$60,000 will be awarded to a multi-faculty, cross-disciplinary project that addresses the strengths and limitations of applying innovative technology in an interdisciplinary environment, creating a sustainable framework that ensures continued use and high measurable impact for future campus-wide implementation in support of teaching and learning.

Technology Innovation Award
To continue the supporting role for innovation in technology for teaching and learning, this grant program will also fund awards of a maximum of $15,000 to individual faculty project proposals that advance the ground-breaking use of technology for integration in the curriculum.

Eligibility
All Purdue statewide technology faculty and all tenure-track and clinical faculty at the West Lafayette campus are eligible.

Project Themes
Specific project themes this year include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Globalization
Projects promoting multi-national collaborations in technology-assisted education.
  • Integration and Aggregation
Projects encouraging the integration of social media with learning communities to promote learning and collaboration.
  • Mobile
Projects integrating mobile devices into the learning process.
  • New Interface Technologies
Projects utilizing non-traditional electronic interaction technologies to present learning material to students in traditional or non-traditional learning environments.
  • New Pedagogy
Instructional projects that provide new approaches or strategies for teaching utilizing technology.

Evaluation Process
All proposals submitted are required to meet the criteria outlined in the checklist Appendix I - Application Checklist for 2010-2011. Applicants should go through the checklist to make sure they comply with the criteria. Upon submission of the proposal, IDC (Instructional Development Center) consultants will review the proposal and verify that it satisfies the criteria. In case of a disagreement between the author’s assessment and the IDC’s, the lead faculty member for the project will be contacted immediately by IDC staff and will be given an opportunity to make revisions to the proposal ensuring that it meets all the criteria.

TLT encourages faculty to submit proposals as early as possible to ensure that adequate time is available for any revisions. Faculty submitting by the final deadline will be given two business days to resubmit their revised proposal showing proof that they meet the criteria outlined in the checklist. If the lead faculty member fails to submit a revised proposal within two business days after receiving notification from IDC, or if the revised proposal still does NOT meet the criteria outlined in the checklist the proposal will be disqualified.

All applications meeting the checklist criteria for the 2010-2011 Instructional Technology grants will be evaluated by a faculty committee along with representatives from the Center for Instructional Excellence and ITaP’s Teaching and Learning Technologies department using the rubric outlined in the document titled Appendix II - Proposal Evaluation Form.

Project Requirements

  • Maximum funding for the High Impact Award is limited to $60,000.00.
  • Maximum funding for TLT Digital Content Development Grants is limited to $15,000.00.
  • This program is funded through Academic General Funds (010). Please check with your business office concerning allowable expenditures (for example, please do not include fringe benefits, indirect costs, or graduate student tuition fees). In addition, general-purpose equipment (computer and otherwise) cannot be funded.
  • Duplication of available University services will not be funded (examples: creation of student computer laboratories, development of course management software, video production equipment, flatbed scanners, CD-ROM duplication equipment, and so forth). Teaching and Learning Technologies and other centrally-funded units provide such equipment and services to faculty. If necessary and applicable, a quote regarding the use of such existing services may be included in the budget.
  • Activities funded by this program must be completed within twelve months, although the projects of which they may be a part may run longer to accommodate formative and summative evaluation. Grant winners are expected to provide a midterm and final update of the status of their project.
  • A consultation with an IDC Emerging Technologies Educational Technologist is required prior to submission of the project proposal.
  • Grant recipients are expected to work with the IDC’s Emerging Technologies unit and its development resources staff to complete the project. The role of IDC staff must be clearly defined within the project proposal.
  • Grant recipients are expected to submit a letter of Departmental Support with their project proposal. Appendix III - Sample Departmental Support Letter
  • TLT will set aside $750.00 of the total money allocated to each funded project. These funds will only be made available to grant winners upon their successful acceptance to a professional conference where they will be presenting the results of their project. Additionally, grant recipients will be required to present their projects during the 2011 Teaching & Learning with Technology (TLT) Conference organized by ITaP.
  • Teaching and Learning technologies reserves the right to publish descriptions of grant-winning projects on its website to provide samples for future applicants or to demonstrate best practices.
Proposal Format and Deadlines
Proposals can be submitted through this website by using the link titled "Submit 2010 proposal."

Completed proposals are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, January 25, 2010. Grant winners will be notified during the last week of February and an announcement will also be made at the Teaching & Learning with Technology Conference to be held on April 07-08, 2010. At this conference grant winners will get a chance to share ideas with colleagues and fellow grant winners before they embark on their development activities. After notifications are sent, all grant winners are required to schedule a follow-up consultation with an IDC consultant. During this consultation a more specific time table for the project's completion will be discussed. Grant funds will only be released and transferred to faculty accounts upon completion of this consultation and the signing of an agreement that specifies the details of the timeline and deliverables for the project.
