OnePurdue Institution Name Changed

Please note that the Blackboard OnePurdue Institution has been renamed: it is now called the Purdue Non-Academic Campus.

For more information, see the Blackboard Vista Institutions page.

'Section is not available' Message

With the integration of Blackboard and Banner, many Blackboard sections have been created through Banner in the West Lafayette Academic Campus that instructors are not using.

Students who attempt to enter these sections by clicking on the section name in their My Blackboard Courses List will receive the message, "This section is not available. Please contact your administrator." The message is generated because content has not been applied to the section. Applying content is the first step a Section Designer must take when entering the class for the first time.

Because of their possible use in pushing grades, no Banner-generated classes can be deleted. Please assist students in hiding these unused courses in their My Blackboard Courses List (to do this, click the pencil icon in the upper right of the My Courses box, and select "Hide" next to non-used sections).

Roles in Blackboard Vista

Because of the integration with Banner, the process used to enroll users in online classes has changed, most notably in the West Lafayette Academic Campus, where for-credit classes reside.

The three Blackboard roles that instructors and staff may choose from are:

Instructor: sees the Teach and Student View tabs; has access to the grade book; can upload/download grades; can grade assignments and assessments.

Designer: sees the Build and Student View tabs; uploads files to the class; creates the class home page; creates and edits all class content

Teaching Assistant: sees the Teach and Student View tabs; has all the grade book and grading abilities that the Instructor role does except that it cannot download (export) grades from the grade book.

Instructors enrolled in their Blackboard classes by Banner are automatically given both the Instructor and Designer roles. Blackboard instructors can add others to these roles using TLT's online Add Instructor/TA/Designer application.

Announcing: Qualtrics Survey
Now available for all Purdue Faculty, Staff, Students

Teaching & Learning Technologies (TLT) has selected and put into production a new enterprise-level survey software, Qualtrics Survey. It is the culmination of a 2-year project in which many stakeholders from across the university were consulted, including high-level researchers, the University Institutional Review Board (IRB), Research Computing, the IT Security and Privacy Office, Accessibility Office, and system pie graphsadministrators. The creation of a list of high-priority requirements and detailed checklist of desired features were applied to the investigation of 178 possible systems, and Qualtrics Survey was chosen as the best choice to meet the diverse and wide-ranging surveying needs of Purdue University faculty, staff and students.

Qualtrics combines exceptional ease of use with an advanced set of features. According to Sangeetha Khichadia, Educational Technologist in the Instructional Development Center (IDC), "Qualtrics is an extremely effective online survey. It is simple to use, requiring no technical or design expertise, yet the surveys it creates are sophisticated, professional-looking and clean."

Prof. David Klenosky has been using Qualtrics during the TLT pilot phase in his research methods course. Says Professor Klenosky, "Qualtrics has been a breeze to learn and a joy to use...My students quickly get the hang of the program and discover that, with a minimum investment of time, they are able to create surveys, collect and analyze data, and generate clear and understandable research reports in a relatively easy and stress-free manner."

Prof. Klenosky has also used Qualtrics for his own survey needs. He continues, "I've ... found Qualtrics to be a great tool for collecting information for simple administrative tasks as well as more complex academic research projects...I've been impressed with the versatility, power, and depth of the program."

Now that Qualtrics Survey is available, IDC will work with Hosted Survey users to help with the transition to the new survey tool.  Hosted Survey will be retired at the end of the Spring 2009 semester.

IDC is offering Qualtrics training beginning in October. A training session scheduled for October 6th training session is full, but IDC has scheduled an additional Qualtrics training session on Monday, October 20.

For more information about Qualtrics and to create your account, see the ITaP Qualtrics Survey page.

Digital Content Development Grant Program Kick-off

The annual IDC Digital Content Development Grant program kicks off on Wednesday, October 8, with the first of three scheduled information sessions.

IDC Digital Content Development Grants are awarded each year for faculty-submitted projects that use technology innovatively to increase instructional effectiveness. Faculty are invited to review the Call for Proposals and to register to attend one of the upcoming information sessions.

At the information session, IDC staff will provide an overview of the grant process and resources available to assist instructors in the development process. Previous grant winners will be on hand to talk about their projects and experiences.

New Purdue Web Page Templates Available for Faculty

Faculty home page

IDC has developed a Web site template that faculty may use to create a faculty Web site. The template is based on the newly-designed Purdue Web site style sheets.

The template can be customized for use with any Web-editing software; however, IDC recommends the use of Adobe Contribute for any instructor who wishes to quickly and easily get a Web site published. "Contribute makes it fast and very easy to make the changes needed," says Educational Technologist Sasi Benzigar. Benzigar worked with the Informatics group in TLT in the design and creation of the template. Says Benzigar, "An instructor using Contribute can get their Website online in a matter of minutes."

Adobe Contribute is available in all ITaP instructional computing labs, and can also be purchased for staff/faculty use through ITaP Shopping Online.

Two face-to-face training sessions are currently scheduled for Adobe Contribute: October 1 and October 30. The sessions will feature the new template, and participants will come away from the workshop with a ready-to-use Web site.

New FIT-n-Sit Session
Faculty-in-Technology: come share!

Come spend a relaxing, fun hour with Faculty Ideas about Technology (FIT) at the next Fit-n-Sit , scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, 1:30-2:30pm in LWSN B155.

"This FIT-n-Sit will be focused on identifying new technologies and trends that we as a team should be aware of," says Kevin O'Shea, Educational Technologist in the Emerging Technologies group in IDC, and Coordinator of the Digital Learning Collaboratory.

"We challenge everyone to come with at least three new technologies (web, software, or hardware) and share them with the group. This will help our team, and FIT, focus on topics that you want us to talk about throughout the year.”

Peggy Ertmer and Jennifer Richardson from Curriculum & Instruction are conducting a research project funded by the USDOE (a FIPSE grant) that is looking at different strategies for improving learning outcomes in courses that utilize online discussions. They are looking for one more faculty member to work on this project in exchange for 2 weeks of summer salary (summer 2009).

Requirements for the project

  • Two undergraduate courses, one in spring 2009 and one in fall 2009
  • Use of Blackboard discussions (3-6 per course) and utilization of the peer feedback tool in BB
  • Blackboard discussion questions should emphasize higher order thinking
  • Instructor-involved discussions
  • Students in courses will be required to complete a pre/post survey and an end of course survey
  • Training will be provided to instructor/TAs
  • Attendance at occasional project meetings
  • The faculty member does not need to do any data analysis unless he/she is interested in doing so; the project team will be in charge of this.
