Think before you hit "Print!"

  • If your document doesn't print right away, don't resend it without first checking the print queue. There may be other jobs ahead of yours, or the printer may have run out of paper. If you keep resending your document to the printer, multiple copies will be printed and deducted from your print quota.

Do partial printing
  • If you don't need an entire document printed, select the page range in the print dialog box.
  • On a multi page document, test print a page or two to check formatting and layout before printing the rest of the file.
  • When printing PowerPoint slides, consider printing them 3 or 6 slides to a page, black and white only with no backgrounds. This will speed up the printing process and save your print quota.

Only print what you need
  • Don't print draft copies of your document for every minor revision.
  • Use "Print Preview" to check your document before releasing it to print.
  • Check the number of copies requested.
  • Edit online to avoid printing multiple drafts.
  • Make use of your home directory. Print only what you need, when you need it. You can access your home directory from anywhere.

Other things you can be aware of
  • Avoid printing email messages and web pages.
  • Send documents electronically instead of printing hardcopies.
  • Use the built in spell checker that most applications have to check for spelling and grammatical errors.
  • Print only one copy. Shop around for places where making photocopies is cheaper than printing.
  • Turn off graphics in Web browsers to minimize the number of pages in Web output.
  • Print 2-up or 4-up to include even more printing pages on a single sheet of paper.
  • Make sure you log out. If you leave yourself logged in, someone else may be able to use your print quota.
  • Protect your password to prevent others from using your account.
