VoiceThread is a collaborative tool used for sharing various file types (e.g. videos, images, and documents) across slides and facilitating asynchronous voice discussions. It allows users to make voice comments in an online course environment without being online at the same time. These comments may be in response to a discussion prompt posed by the instructor, similar to a Blackboard discussion board, or they may be in response to a project or presentation a student creates in VoiceThread and shares with the class. Users may also post text-based comments, but the unique aspect of this tool is the ability to upload audio and video comments using a microphone and webcam.

“For the students, it created a much more meaningful discussion. Instead of just reading long lines of text in a discussion board, you’re hearing someone’s voice, seeing their webcam, or reading their brief textual comments in the context of the presentation. The students became more real to each other.”
