Women in High Performance Computing at Purdue forming all-women student supercomputing team, encourages students to apply

ITaP’s research computing unit is seeking a team of six undergraduate women to join the Purdue Women in High Performance Computing Student Cluster Competition team for the SC18 supercomputing conference in Dallas this fall.

About the Student Cluster Competition

The Student Cluster Competition, now in its 12th year, is an opportunity for students to showcase their skills in a friendly, yet spirited, competition. Held as part of the international supercomputing conference’s Students@SC program, the student competition is designed to introduce the next generation of students to the high-performance computing community. The competition draws teams of undergraduate students from around the world. Purdue has had teams in the competition since its inception – but never an all-woman team.

Why join the team

Participation in the Purdue Women in HPC team will provide a multi-disciplinary experience, at the high-performance computing community's largest international gathering.

The student competition is a microcosm of running a modern high-performance computing center that teaches students about pursuing careers in HPC. It demonstrates the breadth of skills, technologies and science it takes to build, maintain and utilize supercomputers. In this real time, 48-hour challenge, teams of undergraduate or high school students assemble small supercomputing clusters on the exhibit floor and race to complete workloads across a series of applications to impress the HPC-industry judges.

Being a part of this team will give students a hands-on learning experience, networking opportunities and the opportunity to travel to Dallas to compete at the conference.

How to apply

If you are interested in participating, please contact Betsy Hillery, manager of HPC services, at eahillery@purdue.edu by Tuesday, April 24. If you think you don’t have enough experience, it’s OK. The ITaP Research Computing team will teach you everything you need to know.
