Deadline to request content transfer from Blackboard to Brightspace August 17

Since January, faculty and instructors requested to have more than 6,000 courses moved from Blackboard Learn to the D2L Brightspace learning management system in anticipation of the switch to the new system this August.

On Aug. 24, access to Blackboard Learn will end; instructors and faculty who haven’t requested content migration should do so as soon as possible – the migration process isn’t automated and may take up to a week to complete. The last day to request content migration is Aug. 17.

Use this link for instructions on how to migrate course content from Blackboard to Brightspace.

Although course materials can be migrated from Blackboard, some instructors have found it easier to create new courses within Brightspace. To learn more about how to get started building a new course, follow the instructions found here

Have questions about teaching with Brightspace?

Teaching and Learning Technologies is hosting virtual workshops, drop-in help sessions and consultations to help faculty and instructors prepare to teach this fall. Those seeking a one-on-one consultation, or a private workshop for a college, department or team can contact tlt@purdue.edu.

Upcoming West Lafayette workshops are:

  • Brightspace Drop-in Help Sessions: Held weekly from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays throughout the summer, this session is designed for instructors to ask questions and get help in an open-lab environment.
  • Transition course materials from Blackboard: Learn about the course migration process, the pros and cons of migrating your course versus rebuilding your course, and what to expect once the course appears in Brightspace.
  • Brightspace Basics:  A flipped workshop where attendees are invited to review the workshop materials in advance and join the session to ask questions and seek demonstrations.  Content will cover organizing your course content, creating assignments and quizzes, setting up your gradebook, and other commonly asked about topics.  This session combines what was previously Brightspace Essentials and Brightspace Gradebook.

Brightspace Feature: Pulse App

When Purdue began the process of reviewing possible replacements for Blackboard Learn, one of the priorities listed by faculty and students was a system that was mobile and tablet friendly.

The Brightspace Pulse App (available for free for Apple and Android) sends push notifications to students’ phones, alerting them to course announcements, new grades and upcoming deadlines. The app’s productivity function allows students to not only see upcoming classes and project due dates, but allows users to schedule their own tasks, like study sessions.

The Brightspace Pulse App also allows students to access their course content easily on a phone or tablet, providing access to course calendars, readings, assignments and grades.
